Sportsmanship Part 35...College Style

Disclaimer: I am a Duke fan.

With that being said, did anybody watch Duke/Maryland last night? (Fritz, I know you are excluded because you can't get into bball) Basketball-wise, it was a great game with tournament style play from both teams. Maryland made me a believer last night and I think they could make some noise in the tourney, although if Greivis Vasquez had a piano dropped on him today looney tunes style, a complaint from me would not be uttered.

My beef with the game was the complete vulgarity of the Maryland fans. This was a national ESPN broadcast, and througout the entire game, every Maryland chant had the F-bomb in it. Some examples:

F-You Scheyer Clap, Clap, Clap Clap Clap
After a band intro, F-You

Is this really condoned at Maryland. I know they are not the smartest bulbs in the box, being that they normally also root for the Deadskins, but at what point are the universities held accountable for that type of behavior. I was talking to some guys at work (Maryland fans) who say they wouldn't dare ever taking their kids to a MD game for fear of this type of unruliness. Really??? And this is okay?? I was completely appalled at their behavior and the fact that no one did anything about it.

Am I overreacting or is that type of behavior crossing the line?

  1. Okay, i completely agree this should have been stopped. I do not feel this should have been allowed.

With that said, can a Duke fan really complain about the way another crowd treats visiting players.

Thats like me being an eagles fan being mad when an opposing crowd treats the Eagle players bad.

  2. Well they did win it all last night. Check out this article:

    http://www.wusa9.com/rss/local_article.aspx?storyid=97981

Also, reading some stories the one of their fans spit in Big Z's face as he left the court.

Now I know I to am a Duke fan and college kids are, well imature college kids and do stupdid things that we all probably have done. My beef is with school officials who condone the behavior and do not do anything to stop it and with Maryland fans who think its funny that they chant that, to them I say its time to grow up.

  3. Da Booth, I know Duke fans do there fair share but you never here F Bombs being dropped against another player all game long.

  4. No I dodn't watch the game but caught highlights on SC.

Glad to see MD won cuz I can't stand Duke but I don't really care for MD either. Oh Well.

MD Fans are complete idiots and I really don't care for the state period.

Other than the crab cakes and Cal Ripken what has it really given us? Oh yea... people who like to drive 50mph in the left lane.

I'm sure there is some sort of code of conduct polic at UMD but I doubt they can enforce it at game being a lot of people aren't students and they are equally involved.

I say play all games with no fans for a month then see if the fans can appreciate the PRIVELAGE off seeing a game and act right.

That goes for all schools, not just UMD.

Fritz, I was surprised DA Booth didn't mention something about you, having multiple aliases on this site, on his last post?

  5. I too am a Duke fan. I wasn't really mad or upset when watching the game and hearing f-you! every timeout or after every big Terp play... I think I was more shocked and confused in how it wasnt attempted to be stopped by school officials. Espn did keep the cameras rolling on them which was weird too because they always shoot to something else when things like that happen.

I was at the Duke/Temple game in Philly in which JJ Redick Broke the ACC scoring record. I sat courtside right in front of the student section and what they were saying was ridiculous (calling Sheldon Williams a baby rapper) but it wasnt stopped here either so you cant blame them for doing it. When walking off the court he had things thrown at him and was called everything you could think of. I was lucky enough to be in the press room after when Couch Chaney went off for 5 minutes about how upset he was in his Temple fans for what they did.

What I'm saying is, I wonder if any of that was done after the game last night??? Probably not!

Are we really comparing Eagle and Blue Devil Fans?

  6. C'mon Da Booth, you know there is a difference between giving an opposing team a hard time and using vulgar tirades against single players.

  7. We just can't seem to get off of this sportsmanship and fan behavior topic! Must be because idiots keep feeding us more to blog about.

Up front I root for Notre Dame, Maryland, and Georgetown in college BBall. IN that order... I can't stand Duke or UNC. Don't know why, just never have.

Before I go further, I agree with you all so for Duke fans on this site there's no need to take offense and respond for what I'm about to say..... I agree, the Maryland fans sounded like idiots for having chants with the "F" bomb. It's immature and lacks creativity. I wish school officials would crack down on this behavior and should be ashamed for being a part in the promotion of it.

With that said, let's not let Duke (or for that matter and other major college fans) off the hook. "Frank" claims you never hear the "F" bomb from Duke fans. Unless "Frank" has been to every DUKE home game and can prove me otherwise, let's not go there. Duke fans seem to think they and their team are so far "above" everyone else. They want you to believe they are all Ward and June Cleaver attending games in their shirts and ties. "Bitch Please"! I'm sure we could find a UNC player who at one time has been cussed at or berated while playing inside the high school arean known as Cameron Indoor Stadium (How can you really call a place not much bigger than Woodbridge's gym a stadium?!) That's a common example of how they think they and what they have are bigger than everyone else's! Don't throw stones at glass houses.

This leads me to college BBALL fan behavior in general. I'm not a fan of how most college fans act. Holding up newspapers in front of faces is stupid, turning around and facing away from the opposing team is stupid, berating the opposing team's bench is stupid.... Man come on, just go, watch the game, cheer when your team scores, boo when the ref makes a bad call, celebrate when your team wins........if the behavior isn't appropriate to do infront of a child under 16 don't do it!!!!!!!!

  8. Well Fritz since you no it all and you are years and years older than all of us you know best. All I am saying is that I actually am a fan of college basketball and watch my teams games. I have watched probably 90% of Duke's home games over the last 15 years. All I was saying is I have never heard the whole crowd chanting F U at a single player. So to you I say BITCH PLEASE! because you yourself admit that you don't even watch much basketball let alone name the starting five of your "favorite teams"

    ReplyDelete
  9. What would you expect of a Notre Dame fan. They play better when their best player is injured.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Usual Staring 5 for ND was:
    Luke Harangody
    Tory Jackson
    Ben Hansbrough
    Tyrone Nash
    Tim Abromaitis

Now that Harangody has been out Jack Cooley (who looks a lot like Harangody) has been getting lots of PT. Along with Jonothan Peoples.

    "BITCH PLEASE"

  11. I can play 2 days whenever we decide.

My team is the New Jersey Nets and the starting five is:

    - Sucks Bad
    - Sucks Ass
    - Really Sucks
    - Sucks Nuts
    - Sucks Sucks
    -

  12. Well we seem to love this talk about Fans, i stated that i thought using the F bomb was completley inapporpriate and they should have just cleared the entire student section.

With that said, who do we have to thank for these crazy student Sections? Answer - Duke.

F bombs aside when you tease and heckle opposing players for years it will come back to haunt your team. As for the throwing things that has nothing to do with Duke, thats just a bunch of assholes that should be arrested.

  13. I can agree with part of your point Da Booth that the Dukies fans cheering against an opponent instead of for their own is similar in nature. I don't agree that they are somehow to blame for the fact that another teams fanbase yells obsenities in chants and at particular players. That is a stretch. But if the Duke fans need to be included in the cleanup of fan actions so that last night doesn't happen again, then I am all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Personally i dont see much of a difference yelling F-U to a player or holding up signs and chanting how stupid and how much of a thug a player is for an entire game. The only difference is one of those words isnt supposed to be allowed on TV. Either one is wrong and pointless.

So Duke students get those signs ready for saturday. Could someone make a sign telling Drew what players are on his team.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You are wrong here DA Booth. I agree with most of your thoughts, but you clearly can't see past your Duke bias on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Roy Williams might have that kid thrown out whos holding that sign up.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Good point Bottle, Roy gets rid of those who mess with his team. Coach K should have not let his players play until the fans stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. You are too much like your former roommate for me to continue beating my head against the wall with this arguement.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No complaints here. I think he should have said something because that could have gotten ugly real quick especially with that flaming Greivis Vasquez running around cursing getting the fans fired up. Just goes to show the positive demeanor and great sportsmanship enstilled in the Duke players.

    ReplyDelete
  20. You are right Bradley, i mean Mass i forget how on here opinions can be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Roy is do busy dealing with his lousy season that compares to the devastation of an earthquake

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well you are now reminded.

    ReplyDelete
  23. DA booth, Frank, Pie goes deep in his first spring training at bats to go along with 6 dingers yesterday....HGH testing tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ill take a lousy season at UNC then anything at Duke.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I hate Pie, everytime i hope the O's give up on him he does something good. Pat Burrell junior.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pie left the game after hurting his leg on a triple his second at bat

  27. 27 (make mine 28) posts under this topic. Is this a new OTW record??? How to you guys get any work done?

I make a motion that we change are screen names to our real names being it seems like everyone knows who everyone is already.

So much for the fun of anonymity.

Mark Booth... you should be a detective!!! Jim Fritz and Bradley Layfield can't get one by you. I bet Bradley would agree to disagree with me too.

I think I'm going to ride around with a "Fuck Duke" sign on my police car this week to see if I get trouble unlike the UMD fans.

The Orioles still have a team???

    ReplyDelete
  28. The Buck im sorry we arent talking about Tiger, we will get back to him soon im sure.

I would be a detective but i heard its really tough to become one.

I dont beleive i ever said Bradley was on under a screen name. I just pointed out someone was acting like bradley. But good try on trying to be funny.

As for that sign on your police car, let me know when you do it, i would like to take a picture.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow!!! I love March madness! I think Duke will be just fine come tourney time. Fritz, you need to watch more b-ball so your bracket is not a total waste. Also, baseball is on the horizion. Can you see an O's v Cubs world series?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Buck- where did lil Jimmy Ringworm get his Andre Agassi sunglasses at???

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bottle Service... I think he stole them from Agassi when they were clubbin and doing meth together at M2 Ultra Lounge.

DA Booth... You got me again with that Tiger bit. No matter how many times I hear it from you, which is alot, I can't stop laughing. Funny how no one, not even me, was talking about Tiger and you happen to bring it up out of the blue. But I'm sure you have your reason(s) why. You will get out of it like you always do. You can always find that loop hole to get yourself out of any way a person may perceive your comments.

Maybe a lawyer instead of a detective???

    ReplyDelete
  32. i love loop holes, what can i say, i do work at SCHS and we know every loop hole their is.

i heard its even harder to be a lawyer than a detective so im definetly out on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "I hate Pie, everytime i hope the O's give up on him he does something good. Pat Burrell junior."

Yeah, I was hoping they would bring back Jay Payton for the 4th outfielder position...C'mon man...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I want Eric Byrnes back, atleast his name is fun to say.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can't argue that point...
