Amatuers invade Augusta National!!!!

When thinking of and developing poll questions for the blog, I try to think of interesting and though provoking topics.    The past couple have been interesting.   In a sense the answers help us see the world of your fellow bloggers and their viewpoints.

The latest poll was in regards to how one of us would play at Augusta National.    So far we have a few answers.......My hope was that we each would give it some serious thought and sit back and be honest on our games.   What I got so far was serious thought and honest views on how some of us "think" our games are.....

Yes, The Buck, I mean Augusta during tournanment conditions.....

Follow me on this train of thought:

Let's assume you just shot an 82 at Heritage Shores, Bay Club, or Bear Trap.  Great round of golf!  Fun day.

Now, keep in mind Augusta is playing about 1,000 yards longer than any of those courses we normally play from. 1,000 yards is like 2 more par 5!    I'm gonna give you credit for 10 more strokes which would be the equivalent of parring 2 more par 5s.  Now your 82 has become a 92......

In order to shoot 82 you probably had no 3-putts. Probably 26 putts total.  That's 1 putting 10 holes and 2 putting the other 8.   Do you think you're going to 1 putt 10 holes at Augusta?  If you do, go play the lottery.
I'm going on a limb here and assume you 2 putt at least 8 of those 10. (That's more than fair on those greens!)  That's 8 more strokes taking that 92 to 100!.......

Now, is anyone here going to tell me that aren't going to 3-putt any green at Augusta?    The pros think they've accomplished something when they don't 3-putt at least 1 hole a round there.  So I'm saying you're going to have at least 1 and probably 2 3-putt holes.  Now you're at 102.......

Then we turn to the fairway lies.   Around here all our fairways are mostly flat giving us fair lies to hit from.  At AUgusta it's not uncommon to have a lie where the ball is a foot above or below your feet.  Are you going to lead me to believe that you're going to have an "82" like ball striking day with the elevations and added difficulty in lies?   I'm adding at least 5 more strokes for bad lies and probably not hitting it off a hanging lie the same way as a flat lie.    Now you're at 107.......

That's a 107 assuming you hit the ball as well there as a day around here shooting 82.!!!!!!!!

Being honest if you normally shoot 80 - 90,  I say 95 to 110 at AN.     90 - 100 here I say equals 115 -125 at AN.

Just my opinion and I include myself in this analysis.

  1. Good view! That's pretty much what I said in my last post reply. Maybe you didn't read it???

Fritz broke it down even further and while I agree with his equation I feel he is being generous.

Lets also add into the fact that the tour guys aren't allowed to take mulligans, fluff their lie, have to count every stroke, and actually re-tee it if they go OB.

Until you play a radiculously hard ass course, like AN, then you can't comprehend the difficulty. It's nothing like any course around here. I have played a course where a major championship was held. Is what not during tourney conditions and I shot a 81. And by no means was this course as beastly as Augusta National.

I'v played with Pros before and there game isn't much different from mine from tee to 150 yards out.

From 150 yds out to the green/short game... They KICK MY ASS. Easily a 8-10 shot swing.

So basically if I have a very good day at Sussex Pines and shoot 72, a tour pro's very good day would be in the very low 60s.

Thats why if Zach Johnson shoots a 80 at AN, I'm putting myself at high 80s low 90s at AN.

  2. Since we are on the golf kick I will chime in. I'm playin May 8th unless I get an offer from some big company making 100k plus a year. Don't see that happening. I 'll be there. I'll shoot between 108 and 121. Truthfully. Say what u want, but I'll drink as much if not more than most (pickle and buck excluded) and have as much if not more fun than the rest.

In regards to AN. I would say that most on this site would shoot in the 115 - 125 range. That puts me in the 150 range, I would need an entire day reserved to play. These guys play EVERY FUCKING DAY they are pros. You guys that are avid golfers are good players, and I am not knocking any one's skills. I am merely stating that it's their job.

Buck, Fritz, I have seen you 2 play and I think if you were able to play as much as you wanted to you guys would be in the hunt to break 100. (As I am writing Buck beat me to the punch but I'm gonna finish) Jones, I have not seen you play, but hear you are somewhat decent. With that being said I still would put your game on the 110 level...

Again this is THE MASTERS. These guys would shoot lights out golf on any given course in this area eagling 17 out of 18 holes, and birdiing the 18th. Let's put things in perspective. With the exception of 1 or 2 people we've never gotten out of Baywoods or even Heritage Shores. Anybody ever played in Northern Ireland??? Doubt it.

I know we are playing fantasy so when I play there I would like to be 6'2". And i dont really give a fuck about the hair, I've got a nice shaped head.

    P. S. Who is MOTORMAN?

  3. Mass you asked if shooting 90-99 was a stretch, ill say yes because i cant think of a bigger word right now.

I gave myself the 100-109 range and i know im lying to myself. I just considered if i was playing my best thats what i MIGHT shoot. If you have to play very good to shoot 80 in delaware you dont break 100 at Augusta.

Like Rollin said this is all fantasy and we will never know. I have seen everyone play on here and I even question the Buck shooting in the 80's but he has a better chance of doing that than any of us have shooting in the 90's.

  4. When I said 80s I meant like 88/89... not 80/81. But that's playing real good.

Realize on this course there is no margin for error. What looks like a good shot could quickly turn into a disaster if the shot lands in the wrong spot or is just a couple yards off.

There is a reason why the announcers say, "He didn't really want to leave the ball there, or that' not a good place to be."

I'v read some related articles on this subject and some experts think the average golfer would average 3.5 putts a hole! That's just putting, nothing else factored in.

I read where Billy Casper shot a 105 two years ago at AN. He was listed as a 16 hcp at the time. This guy plays AN all the time and won The Masters in the 70s. Sure he was 74 years old but a 16 is a 16 and he still has some game.

  5. The Buck has just compared us all to the equivalent of a 74 year old!!!! God knows what are golf games are gonna be like when we really are 74!

  6. Anonymous....

Actually your game will proabably be better when you are 74.

Slower swing speed will keep you out of more trouble.

Years of wisdom will make you realize you should take 1 or 2 more clubs. Cuz it's not about trying to hit a 7 iron 190 yards anymore.

Playing at the break of dawn means fresh cut greens and better putts.

Going to bed at 830 will help you be well rested.

You can get senior citizen discounts on golf equipment and lessons.

Playing with the Havacamps at the Sunday afternoon mixer will certainly boost your ego.

You can use the cool yellow, 70 compression, golf balls cuz you don't care what anyone thinks anymore.

Can sport a tan Members Only jacket on cool days.

Your fixed income won't allow you to spend 5 bucks on a bucket of range balls, which is good cuz you won't get pissed when you hit every ball great on the reange and then suck on the course.

Can play more cuz you are retired and 2/3 of that fixed income goes to your golf membership and clubhouse dues. Causing you have to play six days a week to justify spending 10k a year on golf.

DVRing golf tournaments, cuz you nap thru most of it, allows you to constantly replay golf swings in slow motion and better your swing.

Tube socks and knee braces will give you a much more stable base which is imperative for a good golf swing.

    MISGA (some won't get it).

You can cheat... cuz everyone esle you are playing with does it. (does a 5 ft gimme count as cheating?)

  7. I want to apologize to each member of the blog for not taking 3-4 days to seriously critique, diagnose and analyze playing ability, course conditions and handicaps. I know from this point forward that I must do that to respond to a poll on the One True Word Blog. I hope that my answer did not offend anyone nor cause anyone physical pain.

  8. MASS....don't be so hard on yourself!!! AS TOTW Commissioner I grant you leniency on your vote. I don't care what anyone votes. As I said in my blog, the polls are actually cool because they help me. you, whoever, get the views, temperment of the other bloggers....

My main point was that there are a lot of factors to take into account. It's not like AUgusta National is a monster getting ready to eat you. It's just a golf course. Like any course the more you play it and learn it, the better you should score.......

I look forward to the smooth 34 during the 9-hole singles you're gonna throw at The Buck's ass!

  9. If that happens, I might officially retire from the game...The only bad thing will be when he shoots 33!

I guess I didn't take into account the putting and landing balls on that green. I know that just playing at Bayside in Fenwick my score almost went up by 10 strokes as that place is next to impossible to get a ball to stop on the green.
