True... the SC - Milford rivalry has been a heated one for quite some time now. I was there for the bench(es) clearing brawl between the 2 schools in 1993.
Here is my bottom line with this whole situation and before I begin I am speaking of all high school sports, not just wrestling. I understand that sporting events can and do become intense and emotions run high and hot on due occassions.
I also understand that the parents of these student athletes want whats best for there children and for their team. I don't like when fans curse and call out the coaches and players during a event. Coaching SC football for years I certainly heard my share of shit from SC fans and the parents. Words don't bother me.
And yes I would have a problem with someone grabbing my daughter but I have seen the Illian/Davis clan over the years and I know she isn't little miss innocent. It wasn't like the Milford dude was beating her ass somewhere and the police are 15 minutes away. There was a cop 50 ft from them and the guy grabbed her arm. Get some worth out of your tax dollars. Doesn't justify someone grabbing her though.
Yes Parsley should of shaken the kid's hand but he is asshole and has been for a long time. Let the DIAA deal with that. The dad never should of confronted Parsley just because he didn't shake his kid's hand and Parsley shouldn't of followed him over to the stands to further provoke things. The alleged Milford guy should of never grabbed the Illian girl. But it happened and as a result a small riot endsued putting other innocent bystanders in harms way.
This is where I have a problem. This isn't two kids on the football field or wrestling mat fighting. Where it is a controlled incident between two participants that usually results in the player(s) being suspended for the next event. This spilled outside the palying arena and into the stands.
Grown adults (coaches and fans) thought a hand shake was more important than the well being of everyone else in the building and on the roadways. I think it is laughable that individuals involved were only made to sit out of the next tournament. This goes beyond DIAA and enters into the criminal realm.
These fools should be barred from the school property for at least a year and not allowed to coach or spectate for that time period. There is no excuse for these actions and I can't beleive (actually I can knowing DIAA and the IRSD) more severe actions were not taken. Was Mr. Collins allowed to be a spectator at the tournament the coaches were suspended from?? I'm sure he was and that to is laughable.
What if this would have happened???
1) Parsley shakes the kid's hand and there is No Further Problem. Being a asshole isn't a crime.
2) Parlsey doesn't shake hand but Collin's dad doesn't confront him. Instead Collins calls DIAA and Milford School the next day and demand some sort of action be taken against Parsley. No Further Problem.
3) Collins guy does confront Parsley and speaks his peace but Parsley does not follow and provoke things. No Further Problem.
4) Parsley does follow Collins and stirs shit up and demands police remove Collins at once. No Further Problem if the police can get there before the Milford dude stirs shit up and remove Collins.
5) The Milford dude doesn't grab Illian girl for talking shit to him. Collins removed. No Further Problem.
6) Milford dude does grab young Illian girl for talking shit to him which forces Daddy Illian to react by calling the police who are responding to remove Collins and now Milford dude for grabbing Illian girl. No Further Problem.
7) Daddy Illian doesn't wait for police and goes after Milford Dude which clears the stands and all hell breaks loose. ACTION!!!
We now have a large scale, violent incident involving multiple people in a enclosed gym. Innocent people are now put in harms way by those involved. Luckily no one was hurt.
The police on scene are forced to request a county wide response. Officers county wide are now racing to the scene which puts there lives and other motorists lives in harms way. Luckily no one was hurt.
But in the end I guess it can all be justified because it is just a ongoing, heated, emotional rivalry between SC and Milford. Can't wait for football season when TC attacks Coach Wells!!!

Remember I said I did not condone any of the actions of that night, and I never said it was justified. My last 2 comments were in agreement with #'s 1-6, but not #7, of The Buck's last comments. Action was started far before Illian was involved b/c he was trying to keep his wrestlers from getting involved.
ReplyDeleteYes Mr Collins was asked to stay away from the Duals as well as the Sate Tornament like the coachs.
There were 2 other people banned from any DIAA events for 2 years. If spotted they will be arrested.
Mr Illian was interviewed by the IRSD Board, as well as DIAA, and Henlopen Conference sports committees. They thought this was just punishment due to a number of witnesses in the gym stating that Mr Illilan was too far away from action.
All of the action started before Chip could get ever get involved. As I said before, he was held back by 2 or 3 people, and when police/security saw that he was asked to leave and did as he was asked. The large scale violent incident was started by a number of fans that came out of the stands. There was a lie from Milford Principal printed in the small Milford town paper, and that's where Chip's name was used. No one said anything that night. (I too have been around the Davis/Illian clan, more than anyone on this blog, and know they are no angels!!!! This time, from where I was sitting, they actually were innocent.)
adding to the last comment.
ReplyDeleteapparently one of the two people that were banned from DIAA events was the person that hit the 160lb wrestler from Milford.
Lets just tell the truth about it all. The biggest problem at the Conference tournament was they didnt have the Top Notch Security that the State tournamnet had. I mean John E. Messick Jr. was their in uniform, who is gonna mess with him.
ReplyDeleteI second DA Booth's comments. Who was going to try anything with all that intimidation standing around.
ReplyDeleteTruthfully though, I hope they come down super harsh on all involved with the conference mess as well as the scurmish at the end of the 160lb state final. Doing nothing gives the message that it is okay. These guys need to be severely punished to send a message.
Sounds like it was an eventful Henlopen Conference Tournament with wonderful memories to take away from. But we wouldnt be here blogging about it if it werent for what went down and hopefully alot of good will come out of it and I too hope there is a strong message sent.
ReplyDeleteBut seriously...
Parents (and fans) need to know their role at HS sporting events. They are their to root and cheer on their kids and team and make sure not to put down the opposing team, coaches or fans. I thought most gyms in the state have this big ass Sportsmanship banner hanging up but I didnt see one the last time I was at Sussex Central so maybe everybody got rid of them... Heres how it works... the Student Athletes participate and the coaches coach. The referees and umpires officiate. If something negative were to happen on the playing feild, mat etc. it's in the hands of the officials to take care of it then the coaches. If it gets out of their hands then the AD's and DIAA and if needed John E. Messick Jr. and his boys will too. Parents can just sit back because it will be taken care of by the people who were put in place to do so. But I guess running out and trying to get a dickhead Coach to shake the hand of your kid is more important then the safety of all in attendance like children and the elderly. Cant we all just get along? NO.
I've seen this stuff close up while I was in high school. Seeing all the crazy parents and fans. It was kinda wierd tho, most of the time it was our own crowd yelling at us on the sideline at football games and it wasnt just toward the coaches... Must of been jealousy.
Then theirs the parents who swear their kid should be starting and pretty much try to make the coaches lives living hell (but it really doesnt affect them). Go to practice!!! You'll see why they arent starting!!! Stay tuned in to the upcoming SC baseball season...
All in all, seems like a great way for Cape to break in their new gym. Why didnt Fredman write about it in the Cape Gazette, has every other time Centrals been in a mess.
