It was "cute" a couple of years ago. I rooted for them when they beat Oklahoma and Bob Stoopes....The blue field was a novelty and different.....
Here we are with a college football game of the 2010 season yet to be played and ESPN has me sick and tired of Boise St. football already. The Broncos are ranked pre season #3 and the talk has started already regarding them playing or what they need to do to play in the BCS Championship game. Again, I think it's cute and at times exciting to see an underdog win. But, let's be serious here.
Boise plays in the weak WAC and here's their schedule:
Sept 6 at Virginia Tech
Sept 18 at Wyoming
Sept 25 Oregon St.
Oct 2 at New Mexico St.
Oct 9 Toledo
Oct 16 at San Jose St.
Oct 26 Louisiana St.
Nov 6 Hawaii
Nov 12 at Idaho
Nov 19 Fresno St.
Nov 26 at Nevada
Dec 4 Utah St.
They basically have a 1 game season, vs Va Tech. Other than that they get to play the bully in the WAC and beat up on 2nd and 3rd tier division 1 teams. So you want to tell me if they somehow get up and beat the Hokies in Blacksburg, skate through their weak ass conference schedule, that they are somehow the 1st or 2nd best team in the country? I don't think so!!!
Even if they do go undefeated, any team from the SEC with 3 or less loses should be ranked ahead of the Broncos.
Now, you may argue how well they have played the big boys in bowl games over the past few years. Well, here's my answer: they basically have 1 game to get up for a year and pretty much go into bowl games fresher and with less injuries than any team from the SEC, Big 12, PAC 10, or Big Ten. Can you imagine the difference in freshness with the offensive line compared with an SEC team's line? 1 has 1 tough game. The other is getting beat up every week for 12 weeks!
My early season wish: Go Va Tech!

No break... Sorry Fritz! If BS beats VT then look forward to months of the media talking about BS and the BCS championship game.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with your insight. Sure... It's a great story and good to see a weaker conference team do well against the big boys... Or should I say big boy? VT
Their schedule is a joke and even the BCS computer knows it. That's why they haven't made it the last couple of years. Sure they did well in recent bowl games. I agree with the fatigue and opponent factor Fritz had mentioned. Hell... one year they had to pull out the hook-and-lateral and statute of liberty to barely beat a injury depleted Oklahoma team. And OK was even in the top 5 of the rankings. They just barely beat TCU last year, TCU another team with a joke schedule.
I would have to disagree with you on one thing. I wouldn't agree with the statement they have won bowl games against the big boys. They have been successful in bowl games but other than OK they haven't played a big boy. Their bowl wins since 1999 have come against OK, Louisville, UTEP, Iowa State and TCU. Their losses have been to TCU, Boston College, Louisville, and East Carolina. I don't consider any of these teams big boys.
I give BS a lot of credit and I believe they can hold their own (not win) against the big boys. But on a weekly basis I think they would have a tough time in a major conference. I believe they would have an above 500 record but not a undefeated team like they have now playing chumps.
BS wouldn't finish in the top 3 of the ACC, the Big 10/Big 12 (whatever they are calling themselves now), the SEC, and I would even say the Big East.
Good luck Boise State. I'm sure you will have a great season but in the end the BCS computer will see right through your facade.
By the way.... Those ND gold pants and helmets would look really nice playing on that bright blue turf.
I hope BS waxes VT. Sure they play in a weak conference but lets also point out that they do try and schedule big time programs but noboday wants to play. I mean Oregon does a home and home with them the last two years and Boise State pretty much ruins Oregens season before it begins by beating them. With the BCS the way it is, no big time program wants to play a team like this because it can do nothing but hurt them. So I am rooting for the Boise State's and the TCU's to screw up the BCS, because that may be the only way it will ever change
ReplyDeleteI looked up so interesting stats. In the last 8 years BS (its funny what their initials are) they are something like 90 and 11, they have wond 26 of their last 27 games. Though they are 6-7 vs. BCS schools. Yes they can hang with top schools once a year maybe twice but they shouldnt even get to play them. They went undefeated last year beating only Oregon as a ranked team which was the first game of the year.
ReplyDeleteYes they beat an undefeated team in TCU in their bowl game but lets face it their are 1AA schools that have good records with the schedules these two teams play.
As stupid as i thought the super conferences where in the end i was routing for them. I believe have these big conferences is the only way to get a playoff. VT wins by atleast 10!
Fritz i hope your not watching Mike and Mike they have Mel Kiper on.
I'm double dipping on this topic.
ReplyDeleteI am not a BS hater. I like watching exciting games where an Appalachian St beats a Michigan, etc... I also was excited when BS beat Oklahoma a few years ago (mainly because I can't stand Bob Stoopes).
But I need to stress my main points again for Frank.
1. Yes they play in a weak conference, but don't tell me scheduling Oregon (who has a good season once every 5-10yrs) is a big time program. Oregon goes maybe 6-6 if they played in the SEC.
2. BS can hang in with a big time program once a year because mainly they're not all beat up after a harsh conference schedule. Example: If I was a coach and all I wanted to do was win National Championships I'm not sure I want to coach in the SEC because not only do I gotta play Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia et al week after week, but then I gotta play a 13th game conference championship which can bring it all crashing down! BS can basically stay fresh all year for their 1 "big" game.
3. Other than Va Tech, they're other out of conference games this year are Wyoming, Oregon St., and Toledo. Not what I'd call packed with "Big Time" names. Va Tech's a tough team, especially in Blacksburg, but let's face it, they're usually the best 9-3 team in the nation. No better. Wyoming is pretty country. Oregon St. has a good nucleus this year and if the game was in Oregon, not BS, I think the Beavers could win this game. And Toledo is Toledo.
anybody really know what a "Hokie" is?
Wait a minute... Aren't we all doing what this post is complaining about??? Everyone talking about Boise State and whether or not they are national championship contenders? I think so.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who schedules their games (coach/AD?) and I don't know for sure if whoever it schedules a weak schedule on purpose. If that person(s) does schedule a weak schedule on purpose then shame on them and BS deserves the BCS rejection.
Another possibility is DA Booth's theory on BSC conference teams not scheduling BS because they don't want to get beat. The last thing a Florida, Alabama, Texas, or Ohio State wants to do is lose to BS.
I recall when I was coaching at SC that we had trouble scheduling out of conference games. The big boys up state didn't want to play us cuz they were scared of losing to us. So we were stuck playing Woodbridge and shitty Maryland teams.
I'm not saying BS couldn't play better competition but don't count on it being multiple, top ten teams in a season. Yes their schedule is a joke, it's totally not their fault. However, there are some better teams out there other then some of the scrubs they are playing now.
You do the Hokie pokie, and turn yourself around, and that's what it's all about. That's the only Hokie I know of.
First of all Commish the game is not in Blacksburg, its in Washington and who cares what a Hokie is. Again, I point out that it is hard for them to schedule BCS teams because it does NOT benefit the BCS teams to play them. I used Oregeon as an example as to why a big time program will not play them so try an keep up. I also dont buy into your lame arguement about the one big game a year, because no matter who the team is that plays in a BCS game, they get a month off in between which is an absolute joke. Every year they puch the BCS title game back and pretty soon it they will be playing it after the Super Bowl.
