More is less....or is less more?

I'm curious as to the general opinion of the NFL's talk about going to an 18 game regular season schedule.

As you all know, the NFL currently plays 4 pre-season (exhibition) games and 16 regular season games.

During current NFL owners' meeting the discussion is being heard about changing to only 2 exhibition games with 18 regular season games.  What do you think?    Before you answer consider this......

Middle school teams play 6 games total.
Most high schools play 10 games total.
Div. 1 college used to only play 11 game seasons, and currently intermingle 12 game season every so often.
The NFL used to only play 12 game regular seasons in the '50's and very early '60's. Then they went to 6 pre-season games with 14 regular season games. This was through the rest of the '60's and all of the '70's. Then sometime in the '80's they went to the current setup.

Who out there has ever gone to a pre-season game?    I hardly watch pre-season games after the 1st half on TV let alone pay regular season prices to go to a game.   Call me sour, but why do people pay $100 a ticket and $8 a beer to go to a pre-season game??   ALso, why do people paint their faces and sport the mean, intense game face during their team's pre-season game?

I'm not sure if I'm a player I'd like it....  Face it, most starters don't play much in the pre-season because the risk of injury is too great.  Now play 18 instead of 16 games and that's a long season to try and get through without injury.........

As a fan, how does it affect the importance of each game?  Right now you can't afford to lose more than 4,5, or 6 games a year and have a chance for the playoffs.  Each game is so important and that's what makes the NFL so good.  Players can't take a game off.   That's what makes the NBA sucky.....too many games, too many teams make the playoffs....and you don't need to play hard every night!     Will 18 games take away from each game's intensity?

What do you think?

  1. To me, this seems to be about one thing and one thing only....greed. It boggles my mind that the NFL owners need more money than they already have. These games sell out in nearly every city and merchandise is a great seller, yet these guys want to whore out their employees for two more games, regardless of the physical consequence. I think it is stupid idea, and will take away from the regular season and playoffs. There will be more players hurt, taking away from the product on the field. All so some fat white old guy can have 120 million in his pocket at the end of the year instead of 110.

  2. I agree it is all about money. I dont mind and actually am for cutting preseason games but you have to find some way to evaluate those players on the bubble so you cant cut to much.

I feel that all pre season ticket prices should be 1/4 the price cause you are getting 1/4 of good football.

As for regular season games, as stated before it is only about money. Has nothing to do with them thinking it will be better for the game. Bullcrap it will be worse. I know people say just 20 years ago they added 2 games. SO what at some point you do add to many.

The owners and Goodell argue that football has the shortest of all seasons. And may i ask which is the number one sport in America? Its becasue they dont have pointless games like everyother sport.

Keep it like it is take your millions and shut up owners.

  3. I'm on the fence on this one because I wouldn't mind 2 more weeks of football. I'll agree that its all about the money as well but lets not act like the players are getting screwed here. They will get something out of this as well. I find the whole collective bargaining issue very interesting and hope the players and owners are smart enough to come to a deal and not have a lockout. It will ruin the game. Here is what I think will happen when all is said and done.

    1. The schedule will increase to 18 games. I also think if this happens, teams will have 2 bye weeks a year and rosters will be expanded from the 53 that they currently have now. Also with this schedule change, I was listening to Rich Eisen on the DP show this morning and he was saying that all the off season programs will change as well. Right now, it seems as though these guys are in some sort of camp year round which to me, makes them just as vulerable to injury as the expanded season.

    2. A much needed rookie salary cap will be put in place which is very much needed. There is no reason that Sam Bradford should be getting a record deal when he has not even takin a snap in this league yet. The real money should get paid once you prove yourself in this league.

  4. Frank I agree with your points about the CBA, and really think it makes sense to put a cap on rookie salaries, but not sure an agreement will be met on that front. I hope so though. The 2 bye weeks means an even longer season. The Super Bowl is already in February, how long of a season do we want? I just think that overexposure can help ruin the product, and I think the NFL has the best product going right now.

  5. I think they extend season into February. I mean they have no competition except for college basketball that time of year because nobody cares about NBA or NHL regular season.

  6. and the reason no one cares about the NBA and NHL regular seasons is because they're too long and don't mean anything because too many teams make the playoffs....I'm afraid the NFL is going that route too. I can see in the near future expanding the playoffs to include 2-4 more playoff spots.... I don't want the NFL to get like the NBA and NHL still playing come June....
