Imperfect Ending

Well it has been all over the news today, but if you haven't heard, a missed call by an umpire last night costs Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game. I was watching in real time, and thought it was an out...But it looked close. Then when the slo-mo replay was on, it was obvious that Joyce missed the call. To his credit, the pitcher simply smiled at him and went back to the mound and retired the next batter on a grounder to third. So hear is my question, if you are Commissioner Bud, what do you do now?

A. Overrule the umpires decision and award a perfect game.
B. Stand pat with the decision, but implement replay moving forward.
C. Make no changes.

  1. I have been watching replays of this all day, and no im not at school. I would actually first like to give a lot of credit for the Umpire going into the Tigers lockerroom and appologizing for blowing the call. I cant think of another ump/ref that would or has ever done that.

I love to bitch about umps and refs as much as the nect guy when they blow calls, but i dont think their should be any kind of replay on anything other than homeruns like they have it now. If they were to put instant replay in that would make these long ass games even longer. If you were put in instant replay then you might as well get rid of all umps and have a ump watching the TV and just let the announcer give the call.

I have been back and forth on what i think they should do. I think it would be impossible to overturn a ruling on the field. But since the ump and everyone else has admitted it was an out, i think they should change it. if their was less than two outs or a different inning it may be a different story. But it was the last out so their is no what if and a chance someone else might have had a hit.

Although it could open up a whole can of worms on other calls people think should be reviewed.
I say give the man what he earned, a perfect game.

  2. I say leave it alone. The man has already said he has a perfect game and he will pop the CD in one day and show his son. Deep down he knows it, he doesnt need the record books to say that he has it.

No reason to implement replay. The human element is part of what makes sports great. I mean if you keep adding replay to sports, why even have umps or refs at all.

  3. I really don't think replay would slow down the game as much as you might think. Its not like they review everything, only a couple a game (maybe). Do you think NFL was improved when they implemented replay? I tend to think so, and think it could be positive for baseball as well.

  4. First let me say I have not had the chance to see replays. I have heard it discussed on ESPN radio and WFAN 660am.
As much of an issue ESPN wants to make of this, the 2 people involved show us this is really not an issue at all. Gonzalez never cried, bitched, etc... Joyce admitted after the game he blew the call. Joyce also spoke with Gonzalez, apologized and they hugged the matter closed.
Listening to the Scott VanPelt show on ESPN today he even admitted that it's being made an issue because he and other sports talkers like controversy. Leave it to ESPN to try and make a controversy out of no controversy.

    Now my opinion:
You got to leave the call as is. If I was Gonzalez I would not want it reversed because I would always feel it was tainted. There would always be an asterik next to it or when talking to friends they would be like "O that was the game where the call was reversed".
A reversal also opens the door to discussion of reversal of other calls or future calls. How do you tell the guy safe at 2nd on a steal that it can't be reversed? What about if it's to break the stolen base record? It sets a bad standard to do a reversal. That would remind me of during the NBA semis where Boston had a player who got 2 technical fouls in a game. By NBA rules he gets thrown out of that game, plus cannot play in the following game. Well, because the NBA wanted a Boston/Laker final they reversed the 2nd technical foul the NEXT day so the player could play in the next game vs Orlando. Another reason why the NBA has no credibility to me and I doubt that every game outcome is not already preplanned. MLB does this it hurts credibility.

I don't want a lot of replay in baseball. Sometimes it gets too slow now. What I would like to see is someway to review the strike zone or when a batter trys to check his swing.

Example: the other night the Nationals are beating the Astros in the 9th. Matt Capps is closing for the Nats. 2 outs, 2 strikes on Lance Berkman. Capps throws a nasty breaker and Berkman clearly swings. Both his hands and the bat head cross pass the front of home plate. But because the 3rd base ump doesn't want to end the game on his call gives the "safe" no swing sign. 2 pitches later Berkman lines a 2 run single for an Astros win. That should have been able to be reviewed. I'm just not sure how I would implement it.

  5. what do you do? reverse that bad call and give the win to the Nats and take it away from the Astros?

  6. I dont know what Gonzalez did but Gallaraga should have a perfect game, just kidding commish but thats his name.

I said before i went back and forth on this issue and as much as i hate to admit it becasue Selig is an idiot i have to agree with him, and to be honest i would have agreed with him if he overturned it.

Yes, replay has made the NFL game better, and MLB already has the same Replay in place with boundary rules. With the exception of changing the placement of the ball and catches.

I wouldnt mind if they replayed if a fielder made a catch that may or may not have been dropped/trapped. As for out and safe calls, I dont think it should be treated like a spot of the ball as in football. In football the ref is at times possible 30 to 40 yds away and could have 22 large men blocking their view. Safe out calls in baseball the ump is only 10 feet away and only has two guys to deal with.

I think it would slow down the game thats not that the NFL game isnt long as well, but the way the rules are adds to how long NFL games are, baseball games are slow because of the players and coaches mainly.ONe rule i think that baseball should do is a time rule like in softball you have so many seconds to pitch the ball or its counted as a ball.

  7. Baseball games take long enough as it is. Its not so bad now that they have takin steriods and HGH out of the game, because the game is somewhat trending back to pitching and defense. Right now Bud Selig has a problem. The NFL is so popular and has replaced baseball as the top sport. The umpiring has been horrible (see Joe West) this year and now this one play really blows it all up. Because of the situation, replay is the new hot topic, but lets be honest, if there is no perfect game, nobody is talking about that play today. We would all be talking about the retirement of Ken Griffey.

I am all for speeding up the game, but to me it all starts with players. If pitchers throw more strikes, they walk around the mound after every pitch, hitters dont have to adjust their armor after every pitch. Simple solution would be not a certain time that pitchers have to throw a pitch, but make the hitters keep one foot in the box during the at bat. That alone could probably shave 10 to 15 minutes off the time of the game.

Bottom line is that because of the situation and the performance of the umps to this point this year, the whole replay thing is gaining some serious steam.

  8. Of course coming from a pitcher it would never be their fault. Just kidding, i agree batters take forever also, i didnt add this but giving the pitchers a time limit also gives the batters one as well, if their not ready in time then they get penalized also.
