The Worst All Star Game In Sports

By far the worst all-star game in professional sports has to be the NFL Pro Bowl!  Yes, you die hard football fanatics, I said it!

I never liked it, even when they did play it in Hawaii. Here's why:

  • The game doesn't lend itself to an all star game. There's too much of a risk for injury in football. Unlike baseball, basketball, or hockey, football is just way too physical and you can only play "down" so much. Some pros will tell you that the risk of injury is actually greater when you play 1/2 speed.
  • Leads to my 2nd point. The players do play "down". None of them care who wins the game. Blitzing is not allowed and the offensive and defensive linemen look like they're just dancing with one another. You may say there's no "D" played in the NBA and NHL games, but at least the offensive stars try to put on a show.
  • The uniforms suck!  I love that baseball wears the regular team unnies. Would be impossible for 22 guys on the field at one time with uniforms from 15 different teams.  Would be kinda like when nobody wanted to be "skins" so everybody was "shirt" and blended, you got confused with so many people on the court and threw the basketball to a guy on the other team.
  • Players don't show.  This year is ridiculous with the number of "All Pros" electing not to show up. It's damn embarrassing for the league. I can see Goodell putting in a clause stating that every player, barring injury, must show if selected.    Ron Jaworski was telling a story of back in the 70's when nobody from the NFC wanted to show to play QB. Finally, the 3rd string QB from the Eagles was selected and actually started the game for the NFC that year!   How stupid is that!        On the other hand, Allen "the answer" Iverson was selected to start the NBA game even though he's only played a small part of the season and has sucked when he has played. But he can't wait to go. His viewpoint is if the fans select him he wants to go.
  • The play calling is so "vanilla".  At least do something different like some reverses, flea-flickers, etc...   There ought to be a no punting rule in the Pro Bowl.  Must go for it on 4th down all the time unless you're on the other teams 43. Everything from there would be a 60 yd or less field goal try. Then you must attempt a field goal on 4th down.
  • I haven't watched this game in so long I'm not sure if they still do this, but they used to have the leading team kickoff everytime, even if the other team just scored.  I suggest you must attempt an onside kick every kickoff.

Don't confuse me with Jack Nicholson.  I hate the NBA with a passion. I think the last time i watched a regular season game Dr. J was still playing. But their All-Star weekend is better.

The NHL skills challenge is interesting to watch.

I suggest they try the following:

1. Have an all star challenge.  QBs could see who throws the farthest,  see who can throw it through the tire from the farthest distance, etc...     Punters could compete on downing the ball inside the 10.......  and for Dr. Pepper's Million Dollar Challenge you get a guy out of the stands, put him in the shotgun, snap him the ball and let Dwight Freeney and Demarcus Ware rush from the end and see who sacks him first.  The guy gets the million if he can run and stay on his feet for more than 15 seconds.    Now that would be great TV

well, at least this year we don't have to watch the coaches wear their dumbass looking fake Hawaiian shirts and lays.

  1. I just think they should name an all-pro team and be done with it. Maybe do a skills-type competition the week in between the Super Bowl and Conference Championships, but no game. These guys are so beat up after a full season of football that no format will solve that. In a league where there isn't guaranteed contracts, you can't ask a guy to put his health on the line for a glorified scrimmage.

  2. I agree it should be a skills competition. Here is what I would like to see

    1. Which QB runs the slowest 40 yard dash

    2. To see how far runningback can throw the football

    3. To see OL's and DL's punt

    4. Linebackers kick field goals

    5. One on one's with WR and CB'S with the rolse reversed, Corner's running routes and recievers trying to defend them

    6. Punters and kickers to hold a competition on the sidelines to see who can stand still in the same place the longest.
