Yes, I am a big Notre Dame fan. I admit it. I own hats, jerseys, jackets, flags, pictures, etc... I love the history of the university and the football program. I love names like "Rockne", "Layden", "Parseghian", "Holtz", "Montana", "Zorich", "Theisman", "Bettis", "Crable", etc................. I love the traditions such as the friday night pep rallys, the weekly painting of the helmets, the post game singing of "Notre Dame Our Mother", the 13 National Championships, and one of the most distinguishable college fight songs.
With that said, it's time....time to call for a change.....I hate doing this. I've been a defender of Charlie's. But I can't take anymore....Something has got to give! For the second time in 3 years we've lost to The US Naval Academy. An occasional upset in sports happens, but enough is enough! A program such as ND doesn't lose to Navy!
Now before you take me the wrong way, let me first give kudos the the Midshipmen. They played as a team. You can tell they are well coached. I respect them tremendously. They gang tackle and never give up. They run the triple option to perfection. Not only did they beat ND, but they almost beat Ohio State earlier this season. Would have had it not been for a last play run back by Ohio St. on a 2 pt conversion.
All this while being outweighed on the line of scimmage by 50 lbs a man! All this with a team made up of no one with aspirations of the NFL. All this with a group of guys who get up at 5:30am every day for exercises and class. Unlike most other college football programs, these players spend more time each week in class than they do on the practice field or film room. Tim Tebow might be the only player currently on UF's squad which could survive at the Naval Academy. I doubt anyone on USC would have SAT scores high enough for consideration into the Academy. Forget about anybody on Stoop's OU team.
In our previous blogs about college athletics and qualifications, The US Naval Academy, The Air Force Academy, and West Point are the last bastians of higher educational learning where sports teams are not made up of kids majoring in "pre professional sports", but play because they love the game and love to compete.
It's with this understanding that I now call for the ouster of Coach Charlie Weis. I know, some of you will call me a crybaby, but since I'm the ND fan and you may not be I have the right. I've seen enough!
Yes, Charlie has done a great job recruiting a collection of really good offensive players. His recruiting trips are legendary. He's non-stop. Clausen has gotten better and will probably get an NFL shot. Tight End Kyle Rudolph, and ends Golden Tate and Michael Floyd are NFL quality for sure. Frosh Theo Riddick shows potential to be a big time back....
But Charlie seems to have forgotten that the offense can't play 60 minutes. There has to be a defense and other than freshman linebacker Manti Teo, there isn't one other defensive starter I can say is big time. Remember, Weis was an offensive coordinator in the NFL and it shows. He seems happy to be in a shootout every week. Put up 35 and take your chances.
Charlie was also exposed saturday by Navy on one other area as well.....TEAM PLAY! I love the NFL, but it's an individualistic league. Sell Tom Brady, Manning, T.O., and a few choice others. I guess when you draft the best college kids every year you can play as individuals and get by, even have success. But, let's face it, even the best college teams each year are only made up of a select few who will ever play in the NFL. The majority of all teams are players who will never suit up after graduation. Therefore, playing as a team is critical. ND played as a bunch of individuals while NAVY played like a team.
Want an example: watch the replay of Clausen being tackled at the goal line late in the 2nd half. I give him credit. Jimmy didn't slide. He went head to head with the defensive player. But, while Clausen fumbled the ball on the 1, you can see ND players walking, jogging, looking. Hell, one lineman in the background was giving the TD sign with arms held high. All this while at least a half dozen undermanned midshipmen scrambled for the loose ball. Running full bore into a pile. If you didn't see it I don't need to tell you who ended up with the ball.
Want another? Or should I say 6. That's roughly the number of times inside the 20 Weis calls for his favorite play, the fade route to the corner of the endzone. You know the play....one on one....run to the corner....create a jump ball situation.....QB throws it before anybody's even looking. A pure play based on individual performance. Not once did they connect. I knew it was coming. Navy knew it was coming. The band knew it was coming! Clausen threw for 453 yds, but did not cnnect once on Charlie's "fade". Yet time and time again, Weis stubbornly called for this play. Almost like a spoiled child determined to prove it could work. CHARLIE, YOUR OFFENSIVE LINE AVERAGES 310LBS WHILE NAVY'S "D" LINE AVERAGES 250. RUN THE F'ING BALL! PLAY AS A TEAM!
No doubt about it Charlie likes his NFL playbook with over 200 variations. I like NAVY's with about 10. My God Charlie, Joe Gibbs won Super Bowls with basically 2 running plays. One left. One right. Charlie Weis is too smart for college. He needs a scripted play sheet. Doesn't anyone on the college level yet realize they're not on his level and shouldn't be beating him? When are they gonna learn?
Charlie, I've got a suggestion.. Next time you're on the Navy 10 yd line and you have a 220lb wide receiver like Michael Floyd matched up against a 170 lb "D" back, don't throw the fade. Throw it to Floyd spread wide and let him take on his undermatched man. Better yet, tell your 310 lb panzy "O" line to pull up their britches and like former Central Coach, the late, Dave Bloodsworth used to say, "YOU GOTTA HIT SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!"
Now where do we go from here? ND wants Urban Meyer. However, Meyer spurned them before basically because he wants one thing in writing which ND admin, won't give. He wants to be able to recruit players based on lower entrance qualifications to the University. Yes, ND does have strict entrance qualifications and a base SAT score, unlike a lot of big time football programs. That's why Meyer went to Florida. Because he can recruit anyone he wants whether they can read or write. If they can play football, who cares if "dey cin wead o wite". Heck, when Meyer was choosing ND or UF it wasn't the $ or facility. It was the fact that Meyer wanted it in writing that he could get 2 -3 recruits a year which maybe were under normal entrance requirements. ND wouldn't budge. They said they would give it verbally. Now, I have no love lost for Bob Davie, but that's what they did to him and when he had a couple of incidents with a recruit or two the admin said no more. Result, Davie couldn't recruit players needed to compete with the "community" colleges like USC.
OK, then who? I say let's look at the guy who just beat them, Ken Niumatalolo. Navy doesn't get big recruits, yet they are 6-3 and only rushed for 349 yds against the ND defense. He obviously can compete with a lesser squad because he runs a system designed to do just that. If ND isn't going to loosen up it's recruiting standards then like the military academies, let's run a system that doesn't depend on having big time players to succeed.
Here's another.....Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech. He only took NAVY to 5 straight bowl game victories before leaving last year for Tech. After yesterday's win over Wake Forest, Tech is 9-1 and will break the Top 10 this week. Oh by the way, Tech only rushed for 412 yds yesterday!
Say I'm full of it? Yes, if I'm a high school QB who doesn't care about college championships, just wants to showcase for the NFL, I take Wies and his throw 1st mindset. But, want to guess who won the last National Championship for the Irish? Try Lou Holtz running an option first offense run by Tony Rice. Matter of fact, Holtz to this day strongly believes the "option" should be a staple in any college offensive playbook. I AGREE!
