I writing this in red to honor the college player I believe should win this year's Heisman Trophy. Why red? Well because it's the color of the Stanford Cardinals.... and my choice is TOBY GERHART.
Let me show you my case....
The Heisman is supposed to be an award for the year's outstanding college player who not only dominates, but is a most valuable player.... While all of the candidates are good (I refuse to use Great, because I believe that word to be overused today with athletes), I break it down this way..
1. Tim Tebow: Fine player and a gentleman. Won the award as a sophmore. Had a good year, but not great. Only threw for 18 TD's. Did run for 12 more. But not good enough.
2. Colt McCoy: Has had a fine career at Texas, but the award is not a career award.
Let me break down the position of QB for you further: According to statistics Tebow and McCoy were hardly anything but the best at even their position this year. Tebow is the 49th ranked qb in yards thrown, had only 18 TDs with 5 Interceptions. McCoy was ranked 6th in yds thrown with 3512, had 27 TDs and 12 Ints., but his QB rating of 147 is lower than Tebows of 159. Compared Houston's Case Keenum who threw for 5449 yds with 43 TDs and only 9 Ints. and the number just don't stack up. HELL, EVEN JIMMY "The Quitter" Clausen threw for more yds than either Tebow or McCoy, plus had more TDs and 8 fewer ints than McCoy.
3. Ingram: Only the nation's 5th leading rusher with 1542 yds. Scored a nice 15 TDs. 30 receptions. Nice player, good stats, but keep in mind the quality offensive line he gets to run behind. Most hyped player by the media this year for the Heisman.
2. Suh: 1st round NFL pick. Want him on my "D" line, no question. Most dominating in all of college football? No. Hard for 1 guy on a defense to be most dominating. Block him even with 3 and Nebraska still loses games.
1. TOBY GERHART: Ok, I saw him play in 4 games this year and he was by far the most dominating player I saw all year. He singlehandedly ran my Irish out of town. Check these out.....
Led the nation in rushing with 1736 yds
Led the nation with 26!!!!!!! touchdowns. Matter of fact this set a new NCAA record for TDs.
Led the nation in scoring with 160 points (#2 guy was far behind with 138 points)
Only had 10 receptions, but had a 14.9 yd per catch average.
3 games over 200 yards (200 vs Washington, 223 in a win vs Rose Bowl bound Oregon, and 205 vs ND)
Also rushed for 178 vs USC and scored 3 TD's against the condoms.
I could go on, but my choice is biased and each could make a case. I vote for the white runningback. God knows "Whitey" needs a hero!
"if the van's a rockin, don't come a knockin"
Peace out!
