MONEY TALKS, COMMITTMENTS WALK!!!!!

DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY ought to be ashamed!

On saturday, they sent the football team to Ann Arbor, Michigan to play a game against historic powerhouse University of Michigan. Sacrificial lambs for a $500,000 pay out for playing.

That's right, DSU got a 1/2 Mil for embarrasing it's players who lost 63-6.  I just hope all of the money goes to the football program.  However, in this day and age of "fairness" and Title IX, you know it won't. Instead, the money will go into the athletic "pot" to be divided among all athletic programs. How would you like to have been wearing a Hornet helmet yesterday getting your brain bashed so other non-money making sports like the girls vollyball team gets to reap the rewards?

What's even more amazing is DSU's lack of committment it teaches it's students. "How you say?".........Well, consider the fact that the Hornets were orginally scheduled to play a CONFERENCE game against North Carolina A&T.  A conference game which counts toward the MEAC standings, but was also scheduled for years in advanced!       However, when Michigan came calling in March, Del State saw fit to tell their own conference to go to hell and leave NC A&T in the cold.
Want more?    Well, not only did DSU get a loss against Michigan, but also gets credited with a forfeit to NC A&T.    I guess TWO LOSSES in 1 day is worth $500,000!

Oh, and let's not leave out the other violator involved here, MICHIGAN....

The NCAA let teams schedule 12 games this year. So instead of  the Wolverines scheduling a "real" game, they chose to find a weak Div 1-A opponent so they could guarantee another win. Pad the win-loss record. Get to six wins anyway you can just so you can become "bowl eligible"!   They really ought to be ashamed!  Pay attention to the polls.  I surely hope UM doesn't get any movement for a win like this.

Let's not forget either that the "#1" ranked Florida Gators scheduled and played Charleston Southern earlier this year.

  1. There is a reason that there are four divisions in college football. Sure, there are the rare, occasional upsets like App. State beating Michigan last year, but this is extremely rare. Schools should play within their division and not schedule chump games for easy wins and/or home coming victories.

I also realize that a lot of schools, minus there prescheduled conference schedule, are at the mercy of other schools schedules and desire to play them. This is where the NCAA should step in and help with the out of conference games so schools like Michigan don't get to schedule Wesley College next year.

The one thing that really gets me is that these chump schools get paid a hefty chunk of change to fly to the power house school and get their balls beat in. I agree with Fritz that Del State will retain 500K but the football team will only see a fraction. A big price to pay for these poor young men who have to know they were being thrown to the wolves.

The NCAA should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen. Every year we hear of college players/teams being suspended or penalized for NCAA infractions. The NCAA says the players can not profit from playing football nor can they be paid or receive any perks. Yet Del State U can benefit from these young men and make a quick 500K by sacrificing the team to the Wolverines. Sounds like the same thing to me!!

As I mentioned in a previous blog, D1 football has 12 conferences including the independent conference. Not counting the independent conference, which is comprised of ND, Army, Nave, there are enough teams in each conference that a school could play each team in their conference and have a full 10/11 game schedule. Most of the conferences have 10/11/12 teams (Big East has 8) in them but they are split into 2 sub conferences allowing only 5/6 conference games to be played. This would certainly put a end to scheduling problems and what I think could lead to the a playoff system. The winner of each conference goes to the 12 team playoff to determine the national champ!!

  2. To make it even worse. They had to pay some of the 1/2 million to NC A&T for not playing them. So they didnt even get paid all of that money.
